Field Study #6

Image
Tuesday, November 29 Field Notes: Today was my 6th visit to my field study location. I came to my location at 4:41 pm, and it was just starting to get dark out. Because of the lack of snow, this photo reminds me of fall because of the fallen leaves on the ground! It was 53 degrees outside today and it was very windy! The air was pretty warm for being the end of November, but the strong wind definitely made it chillier. The length of the day today was 9 hours and 19 minutes. Somethings I observed today on my field study was how all the snow from my previous visit had melted because of the stretch of warm weather. Even though there wasn't any snow, the small creeks on either side of the path were still very full of water. The woods were extremely quiet today without any walkers or sporting events going on, and it felt very peaceful. The only sound I could hear was my feet on the path and the wind blowing. I felt the creek water which was very cool, and the crisp texture of a few fal...

Field Study #5

Monday, November 14, 2022 Field Notes: This was my 5th visit I've made to my field study location. I came here after swim practice, and in this picture, you can see that it is just starting to get dark out. I came to my location at 5:22 PM. This was definitely my coldest visit, and the temperature was 37 degrees Fahrenheit. You can see the small bit of snow that fell this weekend in this picture. It was a little windy when I came out, but not really. The length of the day today was 9 hours and 47 minutes. One change I noticed during my field study was that all of the leaves have fallen from the trees, and the only ones left were the ones on the ground. I also noticed the small bit of snow that had fallen, and the overall wet look that the woods had today. Sound-wise, the woods were a lot quieter without the wind rustling through the leaves, and having the leaves crunch on the path under my feet. It was a very quiet visit, except for the visit of a few birds in the trees near me. T...

Field Study #4

Thursday, October 27, 2022 Thursday, October 27 field notes: This was the fourth visit I made to my location. It was a little bit cloudy, and considerably colder than my last visit. It was around 51 degrees, but felt cooler than that. But there was a light breeze, and it was very enjoyable visit! The length of the day was 10 hours and 31 minutes. Today on my visit, I saw that the majority of the trees' colors had changed, and many of the leaves had fallen to the ground. I also noticed some of the branches from the trees had been cut down, and they were laying off the sides of the path. I could hear the crunch of the leaves under my feet, the quiet sound of the creek, and a light breeze going through the trees. One thing that I felt on my visit was a leaf that I found on the ground, which I'm pretty sure came from a maple tree. I took this photo because you can see how the path is completely covered with fallen leaves! I took a few pictures of different trees to represent all ...

Field Study #3

Thursday, October 13, 2022 Field Notes: This afternoon I made my third visit to my field study location. It had been raining for most of the day, so my visit was a lot more wet and chilly than usual. It was 48 degrees out and pretty cloudy, and there was a light sprinkle that I couldn't really feel because of the trees above me. The air was very cold, and it was surprisingly very windy today. The length of today was 11 hours, and 10 minutes. Somethings I saw on my visit was the gradual changing of colors of a few trees, many yellow fallen leaves on the trail, and a little bit of sunlight poking through a couple of trees. I could feel the slippery leaves beneath my feet, the wind blowing through the trees, and felt the texture of a few different leaves. I could hear the football game going on, the water in the stream, and the wind blowing in my ears.   Here is a picture of the woods I took on my visit today: -- As you can see from this picture, most of the trees are still green...

Field Study #2

Thursday, September 29, 2022 Field Notes: Today was the 2nd time I've visited my location in the woods by my house. I went at 6:10 PM and the sun was just starting to go down. It was 59 degrees outside, and it was very sunny, but the air was chilly and there was a little bit of a breeze. The length of today was 12 hours and 10 minutes. Some things I heard were the sounds of the football game going on close to the woods, the wind rustling through the trees, and a few birds singing. Some things I noticed during my visit was the sunlight streaming through the top of the trees, a few squirrels running around, and the wind picking up leaves along the path. I could feel the path beneath my feet, and I felt the creek water, which was very cold. Here's the picture of the woods I took during my visit: One change I noticed changed in the woods today, was this creek. It was previously dried out during my last visit, but because of the rain lately I found that it had a lot of water in it: ...

Wednesday, September 8, 2022 Hello! My name is Ruthie Ryden and this is going to be my field study blog, which will show all of the exciting parts of nature I get to look at and observe over the next few weeks! First, here is the 30x30 are that I'm going to be observing and taking notes on: This is an overhead shot of the woods I am going to be studying. The image below shows a general map that I created that shows the layout of the area I will be in.  Here is an intro video from my first visit to my location: 1st Field Notes These were some observations I took while visiting my location this week:  I visited on Thursday, September 8 at 6:43 PM. It was around 75 degrees, and was pretty sunny outside, but because I was in the woods, it was shady because of the trees. This was my visit visit to my location in the woods. There was a lot going on in the woods today.  I saw a woman walking her dog, chipmunks and squirrels, and even a bunny hopping along the trail. When I...
